BELLA VISTA, Ark. - Nelson Perry Berger, 78, formerly of Towanda died July 15 as a result of a motorcycle accident. He was missing for nearly two months before being found by a fellow cycle rider Sept. 14.

He was born May 6, 1929, in Wellington, the first son of Rienold and Cora (Williams) Berger. He married Ella Marie Schmidt in October 1954, in Evanston, Ill. She preceded him in death in 1996.

He spent two years in Hawaii with the U.S. Army and another 25 years with the Air National Guard at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita prior to retiring in 1989.

Survivors include a daughter, DeeAnn Lay of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a son, Ryan Robert Berger of Tuscon, Ariz.; a grand-daughter, Kari Lynn Berger of Tuscon; brothers, Wilbur and Donald, both of Newton, Ervin of Peabody, Alan of Haysville and Bill of Charleston, Tenn.; sisters, Bonnie Emerson of Mayetta, Wilma Johnson of Basehor, Etta Mae Welty of Wichita and Marjorie Kopperhaven of Walton; and his long-time significant other, Iris Worthington of Towanda.

A memorial service was Oct. 7 in Towanda.

Memorials may be made to the Towanda Senior Center, 317 Main, Towanda, or the First Baptist Church - Towanda Building Fund.

CLAREMORE, Okla. -- Nelson Perry Berger, 78, died Sept. 14, 2007, in Bella Vista. He was born May 6, 1929, in Wellington, Kan., to Reinold Robert and Cora M. Williams Berger. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Marie Schmidt Berger. He served in the Army and the Air National Guard, retiring in 1989 as a master sergeant from McConnell Air Force Base, Kan. He later worked at Pyle's Automotive in Towanda. He was a member of the Scottish Rite F&AM and attended Hiwasse and Towanda Baptist churches. He enjoyed cars, motorcycles, bowling and woodworking.

Survivors include his children, DeeAnn Lay and husband John of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Ryan Berger of Tucson, Ariz.; his siblings, Wilbur Berger and Donald Berger of Newton, Kan., Etta Mae Welty of Wichita, Kan., Ervin Berger of Peabody, Kan., Bonnie Emerson of Mayetta, Kan., Allen Berger of Haysville, Kan., Bill Berger of Charleston, Tenn., Wilma Berger Johnson of Basehor, Kan., and Marjorie Hiebert of Walton, Kan.; and a granddaughter, Kari Lyn Berger.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hiwasse First Baptist Church.
