She was born in Greenville, S.C., on April 22, 1920, a daughter of the late Maude Woodside Ashmore and John Durant Ashmore. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Virginia Johnston, and by a brother, Dr. J.D. Ashmore Jr.
She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Johnston Koonts (Bootsie), of Lexington, and Gwen Johnston Austin and her husband, Alan, of Greenville, S.C.; three sons, Albert Eugene Johnston III of Greenville, S.C., and John Michael Johnston and Robert Graham Johnston. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Stephen A. Pfaff Jr. and Marion P. Koonts, both of Lexington, and Dr. Sara Johnston Vissage and her husband, Jeremiah, of Pickens, S.C.; a great-grandson, Andrew R. Pfaff of Lexington.
Mrs. Johnston attended Coker College in Hartsville, S.C., and graduated from Furman University in Greenville, S.C. She taught school at Berea High School for one year before marrying Albert Eugene Johnston Jr. on Sept. 16, 1942. She was a homemaker after her marriage. She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, S.C.
