Harold Eugene Bayes, 96, of La Plata died Dec. 13, 2008, at Civista Medical Center, La Plata.

A first-class musician and soloist, he played trombone in "The President's Own," as a part of the U.S. Marine Band. Upon retirement as a master sergeant from the Marine band after 27 years of service, he began studies at George Washington University where he earned degrees concluding with a doctorate in education. He made his second career as an educator and administrator. After years of coordinating French language programs and teaching and leading within Prince George's County Public Schools, he retired as principal of Foulois Junior High School in Morningside.

Born April 5, 1912, in Springfield, Mo., he was the son of the late Anna and Harry Bayes.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John W. Bayes.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Margaret L. Bayes, his childhood sweetheart; brother, Alfred L. Bayes of Sedona, Ariz.; son, John J. Bayes, and daughter-in-law, Donna Bayes, of Bowie; daughter, Diane L. Knode, and son-in-law, Wayne Knode, of La Plata; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Christopher and Tracy Bayes, Kimberly and Ron Hare, Angelea and David Hoogerheide, Michael and Christina Bayes, Timothy and Jennifer Bayes, Kelly and Jeremy Parr, and Andrew and Allison Bayes; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services will be private. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
