David Blaine Long, one of eleven children born to John Long and Elizabeth Kilgore, was born on January 22, 1829 on the present site of the City of Bellaire, Ohio. David was a farmer by trade and who raised choice fruits and vegetables. In 1849, he married Cynthia A. Shahan. Ten children were born from this union, including six sons: Harmon, John, James, Samuel, Edwin and George; and four daughters: Sarah Jane, Isabelle, Alice and Cynthia G.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, David and four of his brothers all joined the Union forces. David became a member of Co. H, 61st Reg. OH Vol. Inf., as an orderly sergeant. In this position he fought many important battles. On August 20, 1864 while under the command of Gen. Hooker at the Battle of Peachtree Creek in Fulton Co., Georgia, David was struck in the right shoulder causing extensive damage. His arm was then amputated.
When the war closed, David returned home to his farm three miles west of Bellaire. He and his family lived there some eighteen years and then during the time period 1884 to 1886, the family moved to Labette County, Kansas. Farming in Kansas was not what David expected so after a period of two years the family returned to Ohio.
David and his family were Methodists. David described himself as a true Republican.
