Orphaned by the death of her mother in 1897 (at 9 years and 3 months of age) and her father in 1899 (at 10 years and 8 months of age), Ina Isola, in 1900, lived briefly with her older brothers Robert A., Clarence P. and Herman L. and Robert's wife Lulu M. in Washita County. (In the 1900 census she was enumerated in Elk Township, Washita County, Oklahoma with Robert Alexander, 20, his wife Lulu, 18, brothers Clarence P., 21 and Herman, 14.)
She later stayed with her Aunt Isola (Looney) Kerr before her marriage to David Andrew Cates at the age of 13. They eventually settled on a claim in "No Man's Land," the Oklahoma Panhandle, in 1904, built a dugout to live in and began to raise a family.
They had seven children named Anna Rachel, Mary Emily, David Elmer, John Charles "J. C.," Ina Doreen, David Andrew Jr. and Donald Brady.
