He was a member of Cumberland Lodge #8 F&AM, in 1879 served as Grand Master of Tennessee Grand Lodge of F&AM. He joined East Nashville #1 Order of The Eastern Star and 1897 became a charter member of Rock City Chapter #7, which became #2 in 1900. In 1897 he served as the first Worthy Patron of Rock City Chapter #7 Oreder of the Eastern Star. In 1900 with the formation of Grand Chapter in Tennessee he became the first Worthy Grand Patron of Tennessee Order of the Eastern Star. He served as Worthy Grand Patron unitil 1902.
