James was born in Roane County, Tennessee. By 1840 he was in Fayette County, Illinois. He married Anna Stultz in Roane County, Tennesee on December 23, 1830. James and Anna had seven children. Elizabeth, William, Cornelia Ann, Marion, James Richard, Nancy, and Anna. At his death in 1858 he had three minor children: James Richard and twin sister Nancy and Marion. Guardinship was given to his daughter Cornelia Ann's husband, L. R. Walters. His funeral was done by Barkley Funeral Home. James coffin cost $14.00. It was a lined coffin and had a box. Eight yards of calico was bought at that time, maybe to make a dress for Anna or one of the children for the funeral. This information was found in the Probate records at Fayette County Courthouse in Box 164 Pack 6.
