Emily Etta McCoy was born about 1863 in Aberdeen, Monroe County, Mississippi. The name of her parents were John Carliss McCoy and Nancy Jane Cooper.

Etta, the name she seemed to have preferred, married my great-grandfather, Alfred Alexander Biggs on 31 Jan 1881 in Liberty Township, Van Buren County, Arkansas. She and Alfred farmed in Craig and Liberty Townships, Van Buren Co. for the next seventeen years before moving near Akins, Sequoah County, Oklahoma around 1899.

Six of the eight children Etta bore survived past infancy, five of whom reached adulthood. The links to their individual memorials are available below.

Etta died from pulmonary TB at her home in Obi Hollow (near Akins),Oklahoma on 26 Oct 1916, and she was interred at the Akins Cemetery the following day in a rosewood casket. According to funeral records, the total funeral charges were $27.50.

Etta's grave, along with the graves of her husband, son Oscar and mother-in-law, remained marked only by simple field stones until my gracious late aunt, Irene Biggs Hughes, paid to have a family marker placed on the graves in 1978.

In the only known photo of Emily, she is holding her namesake granddaughter, Etta "Etter" Emily Biggs.

Gravesite Details

The name on Etta's marker is engraved 'Ollie E.'; however, it is incorrect. The stone was added 63 years after her death and there was some confusion abt her name among relatives at the time.
