JOHN R POWELL Ridgeley, W.Va. John Robert Powell, 88, of Old Furnace Road Ridgeley, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at Lions Manor Nursing Home. Born Sept. 2, 1914, in Okonoko, he was the son of the late Floyd Delbert and Mary Edna (Moreland) Powell. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Freda E. (Baldwin) Powell in 1983; three sisters, Ruth Jones, Cumberland; Elizabeth Lechliter, Old Furnace Road; and Beatrice Pauline Baldwin, Old Furnace Road; one brother, Benjamin Powell, Frankfort Road, Ridgeley; infant son, Robert Powell; and one grandson, Patrick Jason Powell. Mr. Powell was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was retired from the Celanese Corporation after 40 years of service. He attended Old Furnace Church of the Brethren and was a member of the Wiley Ford and Short Gap Senior Citizens. Surviving are his wife Claudine (Manning) Powell; one son, James W. Powell and wife Kay, Old Furnace Road; two granddaughters, Krista and husband Eric Lewis, Reykjavik, Iceland; and Andrea and husband Thomas Wolford, II, Bel Air, Cresaptown; two sisters, Iona Baldwin, Old Furnace Road, and Helen Brown, Silver Springs, Fla.; one brother, Floyd D. Powell, Jr., Cumberland; one stepdaughter, Nancy and husband Emory Twigg, Fountain; one stepson, William Manning and wife Brenda, Frankfort Road; step-grandchildren, Jay Manning, Amy Cutter, both of Baltimore, Tonya and Shane DuVall and daughter, Courtney, Keyser. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Douglas Seaman officiating. Interment will be in Abe Cemetery, Old Furnace Road. Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
