Enquirer was a bay colt foaled in 1867 and descended from Diomed, winner of the first English Derby. After being bred by H.F. Vissman of Louisville, he was sold to Abe Buford of Midway, Ky. Enquirer was named for an Ohio newspaper, the Cincinnati Enquirer. As a three-year-old racehorse, Enquirer won all six races entered and earned $20,800. Standing at sixteen and one-fourth hands, he was named the top three-year-old of 1870. An ankle injury cut short Enquirer's racing career, but not before winning the prestigious Kenner Stakes at Saratoga, the Continental Hotel Stakes at Long Branch and the Phoenix Hotel Stakes at Lexington. In 1879, Enquirer was sold to John Harding of the Belle Meade Plantation. Enquirer became one of America's top sires producing such offspring as Getaway, Falsetto, Inspector B and McWhirter. He died in his paddock at the plantation on Sept. 13, 1895. He was buried in the paddock and this marker erected over the site. When Belle Meade was sold and the acreage developed, the marker was moved to a site behind the main house where it can be seen today.
