Anderson was a quiet unassuming man. He acquired two parcels of land each being 40 acres. The first parcel was recorded on December 31, 1872, located at NE NE-40, Township 9N, R2E. The second was recorded on Ma 5, 1879, located at NW40, Section 16, Township 9N, R2E. He built a log cabin on this 80 acre homestead. Though the cabin no longer stands the property, located some 7 miles southwest of Cowden, ILL, is still known as Hicks Corner.

Anderson John Hicks was the s/o Richard Hicks, b. 1805 NC and Keziah (UMN) Hicks, b. 1806, Kentucky. In the 1850 Census he was 3rd of 8 Children.
