Ruth was born March 16, 1910, in Garden City, Kan., to Eugene and Lena Jaeggy Stoeckly. She grew up in Garden City, where she graduated from high school.
After high school, she attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, from which she graduated in 1930.
Ruth was a mathematics teacher in Garden City and Meeker.
She married James Daniel Crawford on Jan. 19, 1940, in Garden City. James Crawford was the grandson of a Steamboat Springs founder.
The couple later moved to Billings, Mont., where Ruth taught school and attended Eastern Montana College in 1968. She earned a master's degree in education.
James Crawford passed away in 1975.
Ruth enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking, sewing, orienteering and family activities. She competed internationally in the sport of orienteering, all the way through her late-80s.
She was a frequent medal-winner in competitions in Europe, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Russia, Japan and Canada. She also competed at the 1997 Veteran World Cup in Minnesota and the 1998 Nike World Masters Game in Portland.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother and a sister.
She is survived by two sons, John Carr Crawford of Olympia, Wash., and James Logan Crawford of Belmont, Mass.; two daughters, Nancy M. Rosi of Denver and Sharon L. Crawford of Frisco; a brother, William F. Stoeckly of Denver; a sister, Erika Saltzman of Peoria, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Friday at Steamboat Springs Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Wheat Ridge in care of the Yampa Valley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 776090, Steamboat Springs, CO, 80477.
