Anna Elizabeth, the second of seven surviving children, was born on Jan. 26, 1906, at Zeeland, to Wendelin Braun and Julianna (Keller) Braun. The family moved to Bismarck in 1911. The trip took five days by horse-drawn wagon and their first home there was a tarpaper-covered two-room house with no indoor plumbing or running water. At that time there were four children, all daughters. Anna's parents and grandparents were all born in Ukraine and were immigrants to the United States. In 1885, her paternal grandparents, Wendelin and Eva (Schleppe) Braun, were among the first immigrants from Ukraine to settle in North Dakota.
On Sept. 18, 1928, she married Anthony (Tony) Gerhart in Bismarck. Mr. Gerhart was service manager for the Montgomery Ward Store for many years. He died in 1988. Except for a brief period during the early '30s, she spent the remainder of her life in Bismarck. She was a Charter and life member of the Bismarck Eagles Auxiliary and the Catholic Daughters of America.
Although she touched many lives, she and Tony were an especially significant part of Tim and Terry's lives after the death of their father, James, at an early age. Special mention goes to Tim for his attention and loving care for her in her final years. The family also wishes to thank Rose Aman for all her help and care. She will be missed by all that knew her.
She is survived by her sister, Pauline Swanson, Bismarck; her son, Daniel Gerhart and his wife, Sally, Holualoa, Hawaii; and five grandchildren, Timothy Gerhart, Bismarck, Michael Gerhart and his wife, Valencia, Alameda, Calif., Laura Gerhart, Cedar Ridge, Calif., Terrance Gerhart of Redding, Calif., and Steven Gerhart, Jamestown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony; her sons, William, Thomas and James, and his wife, Patty.
