John W. Anderson, age 90, of Hepler, Kansas, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Mercy Hospital, Fort Scott, KS. He was born June 8, 1918 the son of John Ralph and Beatrix Winfield (DeLambert) Anderson in Hepler, KS.


He grew up in Hepler, KS and graduated from Hepler High School. John married Doris Irene King on May 10, 1941 in Fort Scott, KS.


He served in the US Army from November 3, 1942 until January 10, 1946. He was in the 711th Tank Battalion and served as a tank gunner in the Pacific Theater for 22 months.


As a teenager, he worked at the D. C. Hutcherson Hardware Store in Hepler, KS. He later worked at Boeing and Beechcraft Air, Wichita, KS; Kansas Army Ammunition Plant, Parsons, KS; and retired from the State of Kansas in January of 1983 where he was part of the maintenance crew.


Survivors include his daughter, Sonja L. (Robert) Tersinar, Walnut, KS; son, Phillip L. (Shirley) Anderson, Walnut, KS; grandchildren, Jeff Tersinar; Gary Tersinar; Sherrie Wright; Tammy Hollister; Timothy Machin; 21 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris Anderson; grandson, Todd Anderson (February 28, 2009); two half-sisters; and one half-brother.
