Elijah was the second youngest of several children born to William H. Harper and his wife Mary Jane "Jane" (Tucker) Harper.

While his grave bears the birth year of 1850, he was listed as 1 year old in the 1850 U.S. census. The 1900 U.S. census records his birth as September 1849. LFC, 24 Nov 2023.

Elijah's dad William was born ~1797-1800 to Samuel & Mary (Ford) Harper. William likely died before the 1860 census as he is not in the household at that time. If William was called into the Civil War effort, there are several William Harper's buried in that regard. Elijah's mom Jane was born ~1810 to William (D(ukes?) & Elizabeth (Dukes?) Tucker. At this time, only one FAG memorial for Elijah's parents and grandparents is known: Elizabeth Tucker (# 25211245).

In 1840 and 1850, Elijah's parents and siblings are living in Crawford County, Georgia (GA). In 1860, they are living in Macon, GA which is where all sources place Elijah for his entire life.

Elijah is a Confederate Army veteran per the typewritten/transcribed obituary by Walter and Jean Ard circa 1990 from the Macon Telegraph newspaper. UPDATE (15 Feb 2021)- he did not serve as a private in company A of 16th Regiment, Georgia Infantry as this was a man named Ellis Dallas Harper who died 27 Feb 1864 and is buried in Lynchburg, Virginia. Elijah may have served as a private in 4th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry under Major Clinch; surrendering in May 1865 in Thomasville, Georgia BUT more research needs to be done.

Elijah's siblings:
*Maybe a brother named Samuel, born before 1827; he married Mariah Altman on 03 Dec 1848 in Crawford County, GA. If Samuel is his brother, he is not in the household in 1840 or 1850.
*Unknown female, born between 1826 & 1830 so is between the ages of 10 & 14 for the 1840 census. She is not in the household for the 1850 or 1860 census.
*Female "S" ", age 23 in 1850; born ~1827; probably Sarah who is living in the home in 1860.
*Female "M", age 17 in 1850; born ~1833; this is possibly Mary Elizabeth Harper who marries William H. Richardson on 11 Jul 1850 in Crawford County, GA. Other trees suggest her name is Margaret.
*Female "N", age 15 in 1850; born ~1835; other trees suggest her name was Nancy Ann.
**Male "Wm", age 13 in 1850; born ~1837 but 1840 census suggests he is born between 1830 & 1835, not ~1837. In 1850, William is a machinist living in the family home. Possibly William A. who marries a lady named Martha ~1856; this William dies 21 Mar 1908 in Randolph County, Alabama. All the children of this William are also born in Randolph County, Alabama.
*Male "J M", age 11 in 1850; born ~1839. Possibly J. M. Harper who has a son named John Thomas Harper (1879-1949) who marries Hattie Maude "Hattie" Duffell (1883-1969)
*Male "Jno", age 9 in 185; born ~1841. In 1850, John is a brick mason living in the family home.
*Male "Jesse", age 7 in 1850; born ~1843. Possibly Jesse who marries Lucinda Angeline "Lucy" Long in 1873 in GA. Their children are born in Crawford County, GA. This Jesse dies in Louisiana in 1883. The widow Lucy and her children migrate to Texas.
*Male "M H", age 4 in 1850; born ~1846. In 1860 he would have been 14; he is not in the household.
*Female "J", age 2 in 1850; born ~1848. This is Joanna who is last mentioned in 1860 in the family home.
*Joseph, born 1856 according to his gravestone & obituary, though the 1860 census is transcribed as saying he is 10 & bonr ~1850. I believe the census taker's handwriting was sloppy & he is 4 years old in 1860. Joseph (FAG# 35481041), is also buried in Cedar Ridge cemetery.
*Some trees assigned a sibling named John, born ~1832 but I find no evidence of him in the home from 1840-1860.

Elijah David Harper is often referred to as "E.D." in public documents.

Elijah married Frances Catherine "Fannie" Bryant (1851-1899) about 1870. Fannie is the daughter of David Washington Bryant and his first wife, Margaret L. Hudson. Fannie was interestingly buried in Haynesville First Baptist Church Cemetery, Hayneville-Hawkinsville, Houston County, Georgia (FAG# 99467350). They have at least six children together:
*Margaret "Maggie" (1871-1938) who marries John Thomas on 21 Sep 1890 in Bibb County. Maggie is a widow in 1900; she has three children living and has already buried three children. She marries Taylor Jackson Wilson on 14 Mar 1904 in Macon, GA; they have three children together.
*Sarah Jane (1873-1951) who marries William Bowden "Bud" Bassett, Sr.; they have six children.
*John Thomas (1876-1947) who marries Hattie Magdaline "Hattie" Bloodworth in 1902 in Bibb County, GA. Hattie & their infant daughter Alma pass away in 1904. John marries again to Hattie Pauline "Hattie" Hollis on 20 Sep 1905 in Bibb County, GA; they have six children.
*William Washington *1879-1940) who marries Mary Frances Wilson (half-sister of Taylor Jackson Wilson) on 13 May 1898 in Dooly County, GA. They have 14 children.
*Edna Ola "Ola" (1881-1930) who marries George W. Bartlett on 22 Aug 1903 in Bibb County, GA. They have two children.
*Leonard Augustus Sr. (1883-1941) who marries Leila Mae "Leila" Campbell on 29 May 1903 in Bibb County, GA. They have seven children.

In 1880, at the age of 29, E. D. is a bridge night watchman.
Prior to 1888, Elijah is a policeman.
In 1888, at the age of 38, Elijah is a fireman on board train engines for the Covington & Macon Railway which travels between Macon and Hillsboro, GA.
In 1900, at the age of 49, Elijah is a RR laborer.
In 1910, at the age of 59, Elijah is a mattress maker

In 1899, Elijah's wife Fannie passes away at the age of 48. Elijah is also 48. Their children are ages 15-28; three of their children are married and they have at least four grandchildren already. The widower Elijah never remarries. Instead he lives with his children and many grandchildren. Elijah survives his wife and all of his siblings. He passes away at the age of 77.

Note plot 2F10 and 2F11 are both within a stone wall. The plots were purchased by William Washington Harper when his father-in-law, David W. Wilson, died in 1901. LFC, 24 Nov 2023.
