Death a Relief To Loren Jenkins
Life-long Resident of Portland Dies After Many Months of Suffering.
Band Boys Show Respect
Play at Funeral of Man Who Worked for Years to Keep Musical Organization Together.
Loren J. Jenkins died Tuesday death bringing a welcome relief after many months of suffering from cancer.
The funeral was held Thursday afternoon, the Rev. D.
E. Millard officiating. The services were in charge of the Masonic lodge.
Several years ago a cancer appeared on Mr. Jenkins lower jaw. He went to Chicago and underwent an operation. For a time he seemed to improve but the cancer soon appeared again and for many months he has suffered greatly.
As a respect to his memory the band boys led the procession at his funeral. Mr. Jenkins gave his time to the band for many years. He watched the older players drop out one by one but he remained faithful until he could not hold the instrument to his lips. Music was the ruling passion of his life and perhaps nothing would have pleased him more than that the band should lead his funeral procession. Almost with his last breath he had asked friends to come and play for him.
Mr. Jenkins was born in Portland 67 years ago. The mill was closed during the funeral and his friends from there acted as the bearers.
He leaves a widow and one son, Bert Jenkins of Lansing.
Mr. Jenkins was universally esteemed but his closest friends could not but breathe a sigh of relief when they heard that the end of his suffering had come.
