HEYBURN - Ethel Louise Meiners Orton Higginson, 89, passed away peacefully at her daughter's home in Vista, Calif., on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at 6 p.m.
She was born in 1920 in Lund, Idaho, the daughter of Carl Walter and Alice Blauer Meiners.
Her funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the Heyburn LDS 2nd Ward Chapel, 530 Villa Drive in Heyburn, with Bishop J. Berkeley Orton officiating. Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 5, at the Hansen-Payne Mortuary, 321 E. Main. St. in Burley, Idaho, and from 11:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
She is survived by her brothers, Lewis Meiners of St. Anthony, Idaho, and Myron and Donis Meiners, both of Bountiful, Utah; her sisters, Mary Merztenich of Bowie, Md., and Lily Fife of San Marcos, Calif.; her daughters, Janis (Sherman) Johnson of Springville, Utah, and Lora (Winston) Elton of Vista, Calif.; and her sons, Roscoe (Kathleen) Orton of Rexburg, Idaho, and J. Berkeley (Kelly) Orton of Heyburn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Orton; her second husband, Clyde Higginson; and her oldest daughter, Deon Raymond; siblings, Robert (Bob) Meiners of Rupert, Idaho, Josephine Graham of Shady Cove, Ore., June Horman of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Paul Meiners of Phoenix, Ariz. Ethel had 25 grandchildren and 69 great-grandchildren.
Ethel graduated from Burley High School in 1939 and raised her family in Heyburn. Later in life, she lived in Pleasant Grove, St. George and Salt Lake City, Utah; and Vista, Calif. She spent her life joyfully in the service of her family. She loved dancing, swimming, flowers and music, where she taught children to sing in Primary and Junior Sunday School and adults how to teach children. She had a beautiful singing voice and was active in the Sweet Adelines in Burley. She was very active in the LDS Church, where she served in many capacities, among them as Relief Society president, Stake Primary Music chairman and den mother to the Cub Scouts. She was very loved by her siblings, children and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.
