She was born in Athens, Ga., moving to Linn, Miss., at an early age where she graduated from high school. She graduated from Mississippi Delta Junior College. She worked as an operator for Bell Telephone until 1950. She also was a teacher with Head Start. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Indianola, where she had lived since 2000.
Survivors include two daughters, Libby Edwards of Indianola and Sandra Read of Southaven; two sons, John Read of Southaven and Bill Read of West Frankfort, Ill.; two sisters, Mary Rogers of Columbus, Ga., and Julia Embry of West Frankfort, Ill.; one brother, John Embry of Pearl; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mortimer Funeral Home, Indianola.
