Ceres Youth Dies When Crash Ends Speed Flight

Daniel Beaver, 15, of 2320 North 6th Street, Ceres, was killed and five other persons suffered major injuries in three accidents in Stanislaus County yesterday.

The driver of the car in which Beaver was a passenger, William Morris, 19, of 2736 Charlotte Avenue, Ceres, is under arrest in Scenic General Hospital charged with felony manslaughter.

The California Highway Patrol said Beaver was killed at 9 p.m. and Morris, Karen Morse, 14, 1425 Grandview Avenue, and her sister, Sheila, 12, both of Ceres, were injured when Morris' car overturned at Herndon Road and Richland Avenue south of Modesto.

CHP officers said Morris was fleeing a non-injury hit-run accident on El Camino and was traveling north on Herndon Road at a high rate of speed. Officers said he tried to turn onto Richland Avenue but turned the corner too sharply, hitting a post.

All four youngsters were thrown from the car which ended up on its wheels on top of Beaver.

Morris is in fair condition in Scenic General Hospital. Sheila Morse is listed in satisfactory condition and Karen is in fair condition. Beaver was pronounced dead on arrival.

Officers said Morris was going at least 60 miles an hour when he tried to make the turn.

Beaver was the son of Marjorie Beaver, and was a student at Ceres High School.

Survivors in addition to his mother includes seven brothers and sisters, Carl, Paul, Leanna and Charlie Beaver, all of Ceres, Shirley Jo Slay of Oklahoma, Barbara Leeson of Ceres and George Beaver of the Marine Corps.

Funeral services are pending in the Ceres Funeral Home.
