He served in the CSA Army in Co H, 28th regiment, NC troops. He enlisted in Cleveland Co NC at age 21 on 22 Aug 1861. He was wounded near Shepherdstown VA on 20 Sept 1862. He returned to duty and was captured in a hospital at Richmond VA on 3 Apr 1865. He was transferred to Newport News VA on 23 Apr 1865, where he was released on 30 Jun 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
