Leander was born on Sept. 1, 1905 to John F. and Mary (Berg) Brandt of Pewaukee. He was born and raised in the Town of Pewaukee and attended the old Meadowbrook School. In 1943, he married Jeanette Buntrock from the Village of Pewaukee. They had 4 children, Mary Lee Geszvain, Phillip Brandt, Cheryl Pero and Leanne Bennett. Lee was a dairy farmer for Golden Guernsey until 1959, but continued to grow hay, straw, oats and pumpkins. He also worked for the Waukesha County Highway Dept.
