Roy Arnold Barber, 73, 362 Jefferson, died Thursday morning in Bannock Regional Medical Center following an illness.

He was born June 15, 1914 in Kansas City, Kansas to Charles Sherdian and Caroline Amalie Hansen Barber. He attended schools in Kansas City and worked at a box factory.

He was a member of the Oklahoma National Guard that was mobilized and served in Europe during World War II. He served with the Army in Co H, 180 Inf, 45th Div under General George S. Patton. He was wounded in Italy in December of 1943 and received two purple hearts and a bronze star.

He married Mary Alice May, May 13 1944 in Eufaula, OK. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Temple in August 1948.
Since 1949 they have made their home in Pocatello where Mr. Barber worked as a custodian for the Pocatello School District for 27 years. He worked at Washington Elementary, Irving Junior High, Pocatello High, Alameda Junior High and for the last 17 years was custodian at Highland High, before his retirement in 1974.

He was a high priest in the 17th Ward LDS Church and served in various capacities, including three times as a member of the bishopric and three times a scoutmaster. He was Sunday school superintendent, high priest group leader, taught in primary and worked in the MIA.
He was a branch president in Oklahoma and from 1935 to 1937 served a mission to the Central States. He also completed two stake missions and was a home teacher.
In 1981 Mr. Barber was voted 'Pocatello Man of the Year' through the Pocatello School District No. 25 Athletic Dept. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 4, the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter No.3. He enjoyed genealogy and model railroading.

Survivors include his wife of Pocatello; a son, Joseph R. Barber; and a daughter, Mrs. David (Ruth) Garbett, both of Pocatello; a brother, Otto A. Barber, Kansas City, MO; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law.

Funeral services will be noon on Monday at the Pocatello LDS 17th Ward Chapel at Jefferson and Walnut Streets with Bishop Don Bloxham officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Manning Funeral Chapel. On Monday, friends may call at the 17th Ward Chapel from 11 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
