Philip Joseph Altizer, Sr., 77, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, April 4, 2009. A longtime member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, Mr. Altizer was a Korean War Veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Altizer was a graduate of Villanova University with a Bachelor's of Science in Economics, and retired from Allstate Insurance Company with 37 years of service. A life dedicated to service, Mr. Altizer served as Secretary of Kiwanis Club of Southwest Virginia for a number of years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman J., Sr. and Anna Altizer, a brother, Herman J. Altizer, Jr., and a daughter, Theresa Ann Altizer. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia K. Altizer; three sons, Capt. Philip J. Altizer, Jr., U.S. Navy, Bartlett, Tenn.; Christopher C. Altizer, Chatham, N.J., David C. Altizer, Roanoke; a daughter, Diane A. Nestor, Virginia Beach, Va.; and four grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church with Msgr. Joseph P. Lehman and Father James Parke officiating. Interment will follow in St. Andrew's Diocesian Catholic Cemetery.
