Mrs. Olbermann was possibly one of the nation's biggest baseball fans. She began attending New York Yankee baseball games in 1934 where she met Babe Ruth as a small girl. She attended, listened on the radio, or watched on television every Yankee Game since until her death. The estimate is she attended approximately 1,500 Yankee games in her lifetime.
Though well known by players, owners, and executives alike as a loyal fan, it was her run-in with Yankee second baseman, Chuck Knoblauch that gave her life's obligatory 15 minutes of fame. During a game in June of 2000, Knoblauch launched the ball to the first baseman which proceeded to go into the stands and hit Mrs. Olbermann right between the eyes, breaking her glasses but otherwise leaving her unscathed. She was the darling of New York for several days after that, gracing the cover of the city's papers for days.
Chuck Knoblauch felt guilty for years about the event but Marie held no hard feelings against him She loved it. It made her famous!
It was her love of baseball that influenced her son Keith who, at the age of fourteen, published his first book about the sport. Keith went on to be the first co-host of ESPN'S Sports Center and is considered one of our nations foremost experts on baseball. At the time of Marie's death, Keith was the host of MSNBC's Countdown With Keith Olbermann and a analyst for NBC's Sunday Night Football.
Marie was also a huge fan of Opera and a well respected pre-school teacher.
She is survived by her husband, Ted, her children Keith and Jenna, and her grandchildren Jacob and Eve.
