With sorrow we announce the death of our well-known former townsman, Milton S. Ellsworth, who died at his home in Wheaton, Monday, May 25th, in his sixty-seventh year (1896) of cystitis, after a painful illness extending over a period of thirteen weeks.

M. S. Ellsworth was born at Troy, New York, September 8th, 1829. When but a boy he came to Naperville with his father, so he may be considered a pioneer of this place. His opportunities for obtaining an education were limited to such as the district school afforded, supplemented with a few terms at Mt. Morris Academy.

He was for many years his father's assistant in managing the famous DuPage County Nursery, then the largest and most thoroughly equipped enterprise of the kind west of Ohio. He was also his assistant during the years of his incumbrancy of the office of Internal Revenue Collector of this district.

In 1877 he was elected county clerk of DuPage County and settled in Wheaton, where his discharge of the multifanious and important duties of that office have been so acceptable that he has been elected five consecutive terms and had his life been spared to round out his present term he would have filled the office twenty-one years.

He had especially endeared himself to all with whom he had official relations by his uniform courtesy, his general nature, his thorough knowledge of the duties of the office, his gratuitous information to scores of those having business with the county. Many an old soldier and pensioner will rise up and bless him in respect of assistance rendered and favors received. He was optimistic to a degree and will be most missed in the home circle and social life, where his smiling face, cherry voice and fund of information and anecdotes always made him welcome. In politics he was an active and pronounced Republican from the inception of the party.

He was married May 22nd, 1854, to Miss Jane E. Barber. Of this union twin children were born. Lewis, the well known druggist of Wheaton, and Carrie, who for several years has officiated as clerk in his office.

He was a member of the Congregational Church, of Euclid Lodge, No. 65, A.F.&A.M.; of Euclid Chapter, No.13, R.A.M.; and Gebal Council No.81.
