Alvin Cecil Cottam (Duke) died at his home on April 6, 2009, surrounded by his family.

He was born in St. George on the 27th day of July 1924 to Charles Walter Cottam and Sarah Ellen Manwaring.

He married his sweetheart, Carol Stevens of Polson, Montana on Nov. 26, 1948. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on April 8, 1952.

Their sixty years together, most of which they lived in St. George, brought them seven children: Celia and husband Jim Jeffery live in Washington, UT; Steve and wife Sherrie Leavitt live in Magna, UT; Kay Lynn and husband Harvey McArthur live in St. George; Fern and husband Kent Goodwin live in St. George; Jeannette and husband Allen Frei live in Santa Clara, UT; Donald and wife Teresa Esparza live in Santa Clara; Robert and wife Joyce Spila, live in St. George. They love and know personally each of their 27 grandchildren, and by the end of 2009, will boast 52 great grandchildren!

Growing up in St. George in the early 1900's, was a different world. He and his brothers spent many hours together tending cattle, fishing and playing on the red hill.

Alvin graduated from Dixie, and later on during WWII, he served in the army in the European Theater.

As a young man, he learned how to work hard and show compassion for his fellow man, but he also knew how to have fun. He was a marvelous dancer and loved to kick up his heels.

He was a carpenter/builder by trade. Back then, a builder did it all. From pouring the foundation, to putting on the shingles, to hanging the doors and cabinets.

Many a building in this area has felt the touch of our dad's hands.

Alvin moves on to the next world to greet his mother, whom he hasn't seen since he was seven years old; his papa; 3 brother's, R.V., Raymond and Donald; and 3 sisters, Ellen, Mildred and Verda. He leaves behind 3 brothers; LaVell, Grant and William and 3 sisters; Emily, Mary Alice and Cathy; his beautiful wife Carol and all 101 of his posterity. His family and many friends will miss his sense of humor, helping hands and loving heart.

Funeral services will be held at the St. George LDS 1st Ward, 591 W. 500 N. (Bluff Street Chapel), Thursday, April 9th, 2009. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary
