She was born Oct. 19, 1946, in Dodge City, to Wilton B. "Bud" and Lola R. Winkler Heimer. When she was 3, she contracted polio, which left her with weaknesses. She graduated from Jetmore High School in 1964 and from Fort Hays State College in 1968 with a degree in education.
Mrs. Simpkins taught elementary school and was a district librarian in the Garden City school system for nearly 30 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Garden City and was active in the El Zurape Group.
On Jan. 5, 1985, she married Wayne Simpkins in Garden City. He survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Sonya Simpkins of Denver; her mother, of Jetmore; and a brother, Jim Heimer of Littleton, Colo. She was preceded in death by her father.
Funeral was at the United Methodist Church, Jetmore. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore.
