Ilion. Dec. 23.
At his home on Morgan street at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon occured the death of John F. Thomas. For some time past his health had been impaired. Death was caused by a complication of diseases. Deceased was born in Jordanville, in 1836. aged 72 years and six months, and had been a resident of this village for 58 years, during which time he had been connected with the business interests of the village. At one time he was employed as master mechanic in the armory, and later acted as superintendent of the Remington ?????? Works. For 72 (?) years he was contractor for the State and superintendent of section four of the canal. He was a former member of Excelsior Steamer and Hose Company. No. 2. now the C. W. Carpenter Steamer and Hose Company. No. 2, and in l872 was elected chief engineer of the fire department. In 1858 he was elected president of the village, and during his term of office the engine house used by No. 1 Hose Company was
built. He owned and managed the Ilion Opera House, which he purchased in 1883 for a good many years, and also was an inventor. He is survived by his wife. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 10 o'clock.
Note: There is a descrepancy regarding John's year of birth between 3 sources. His obituary mentions he was born in 1836, vs 1835 that is inscribed on his tombstone and the 1900 New York cenus.
