She was born April 26, 1910, in Snohomish to Earl and Ellen (Miller) Gray.
Dorothy married David K. Bates on Sept. 27, 1926, in Snohomish. In 1943, they moved to Cashmere from Snohomish. They bought an orchard in Cashmere and later one in East Wenatchee. They also owned and operated four restaurants, one in Snohomish, two in Cashmere and Dorothy's Cafe in Wenatchee. Dorothy cooked and baked fresh pies for all four restaurants.
She was a lifelong member of the Free Methodist Church, being involved in many areas of the church, including cooking many dinners and being involved in many Bible studies. Church and family was her life. She is remembered by her large family dinners and her devotion to her children and grandchildren.
Dorothy is survived by her two daughters, Ellen Graybill and her husband, David, of Wenatchee, Betty Smith and her husband, Don, of Cashmere; one son, Richard Bates and his wife, Mariah, of East Wenatchee; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 33 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David, one son, Robert Bates, two brothers, six sisters and one great-great-granddaughter.
Services of Commemoration will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Wenatchee Free Methodist Church, with pastor Michael Gray officiating. Interment will follow at Wenatchee City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wenatchee Free Methodist Church Children's Ministries.
Services are under the care of Betts Funeral Service.
