A. H. Vallance Dropped Dead In His Store
A. Henry Vallance, the blind newsdealer of Arcade, dropped dead in his store about 5:30 p.m., Saturday, September 9. He had not been feeling well for a week or more, but it was not thought his slight, illness was dangerous. He was about to leave the store, and, as he approached the door he suddenly fell forward, one arm going through a window at the side of the door. He was dead in a few moments. The body was removed to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Haskell, where he had lived the past fourteen years.
A. Henry Vallance was born in Sandusky, August 5, 1881, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Vallance. He has been totally blind since he was five years of age, but notwithstanding this handicap has carried on successfully in business in Arcade for thirty years or more. He was a remarkable man in many ways. He purchased the daily news routes for Buffalo papers about 20 years ago. To this business he has added a news stand business, handling all the magazines, candies, cigars, etc. and did a thriving business. He has been collector for the village and the school district and was a most successful official. He knew all the people of the village and could go directly to any house. He knew all the people of the village and could invariably call one's name on hearing the voice. He was also an expert broom maker.
Funeral services were held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Haskell at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Revs. V.G. Higgs and John R. Riley officiating. Interment was in Sandusky cemetery.
Surviving are a number of aunts and cousins, but none of his immediate family.
Henry Vallance will be greatly missed in Arcade. He always had a pleasant greeting for his host of friends. For the past fourteen years he has made his home with his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Haskell, who have done everything possible to render his affliction less unbearable. Mrs. Haskell and her daughters Frances and Margaret, have served as his eyes, so to speak, driving his car, taking him to theatres, ball games, moving pictures and all sorts of entertainments, and explaining what he could not see. The other members of the family have been equally considerate and kind.
Henry was a man of unswerving integrity, square and honest as the day is long.
