GRAND MEADOW -- The funeral for Arlene O. Stevens will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grand Meadow Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Ann Siverling officiating. Burial will be in Grand Meadow Cemetery.

Arlene Stevens, 88, of Grand Meadow, died Tuesday (April 7, 2009) at her home.

She was born June 9, 1920, in Vienna, S.D., to Melvin and Mary (Fiferlick) Froke. She was the valedictorian of the class of 1938 at Vienna High School. For several years she worked as store and postal clerk in Vienna, then married George Stevens on Dec. 24, 1945, in Vienna. The couple lived in Peterson for 20 years and Mr. Stevens was a depot agent. They were transferred to Lake Preston, S.D., and later to Grand Meadow.

Mrs. Stevens took part in many church activities all her life, and her greatest joy was teaching Sunday school, which she did for more than 60 years. She also sang in the choir and enjoyed leading Bible studies at the nursing home and church circles. She was a member of the Grand Meadow Study Club, served as church librarian, and enjoyed the company of her kitty, Muffin. She was also an avid reader of religious books, and always found comfort in the writings of Corrie Ten Boom and Hansi.

She is survived by a son, Gene (Tamara) of Altura; and a sister, Margaret Hallberg of Clark, S.D. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2004; a sister, Nina Chambers; and a brother, Lester Froke.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Grand Meadow Lutheran Church, and an hour before the service Saturday at the church.

Hindt Funeral Home of Grand Meadow is assisting with arrangements.
