Born at Pencraig in the parish of Cilycwm, county of Carmarthenshire, South Wales. A twin and one of 13 children of John and Mary (Rees) Bowen.

Four of her siblings emigrated from Wales to the United States between 1873 and 1895, three to Pennsylvania and one to Ohio. Sarah had visited the family in 1906 and emigrated in 1909. Two of her siblings pre-deceased her. Sarah died of typhoid and her funeral took place on the day she was due to be married to John Davis; she was buried in her brown velvet wedding dress.
