Joachim BREDOW, son of Daniel and Agusta BREDOW was born in Bergholtz, Laechwitz, Uckermark, Brandenburg, Prussia.2,4 He married Christine Louise NEUMANN. Joachim BREDOW - Tagelohner (translated as "day laborer") and family applied to emigrate to America in 1843, and were among the Prussian Old Lutherans that made the 5000 mile journey to America from Germany fleeing religious persecution.5 Joachim and Christine Louise BREDOW and their six children, ranging in age from 16 years to 1 year traveled on the Barque Reform captained by Vincent Tilyou, was one the largest families to leave Prussia. Their youngest child, Wilhelmine was one of the 5 babies, age one year or less, to die en route. Their journey accross the ocean lasted almost two months. They arrived in New York, September 4th 1843. Joachim and Christine and their five children are listed among the original 500 settlers of Bergholz, New York. All of these being Prussian Old Lutherans fleeing their homeland. I wonder if Joachim and Christine could have older children that may have stayed in Prussia or perhaps died at young age. The oldest child I know of is Johann b. 1826. Joachim and Christine would have been 25 when he was born. I read on page 28 of Eugene CAMANN'S book that "discharge papers were held back from young men of military age" so perhaps there could be an older son or two.

Joachim and Christine are listed in the 1850 census for Wheatfield, Niagara County, New York with 6 children, the last 3 being born in New York, Louisa [Christine] - 19, William - 14, unreadable - 12, Daniel - 6, Mary - 4, Ernestine - 2. Johann Friedrich had already married so is not listed with the family. Joachim's name appears in a listing of all male members of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Bergholtz, Niagara Co., New York, 21 years and older for the years 1850, 1851 and 1852. In 1853 Joachim's name appears, but is crossed out and Michigan is written after it.4 After that we find the family in Macomb Co., Michigan.

In 1860 Joachim is on the Macomb, Macomb Co., Michigan census as Jacob. He is listed with Christine and children, Daniel - 16, Mary - Mary -14, Ernestine - 11, Jacob - 8, and Malvina -3. Malvina was born in Michigan. The other children were born in New York. Joachim is a farmer and his real estate is valued at $200 and personal property at $40. I didn't see Joachim/Jacob on the Agricultural Census, it might be because he had a smaller farm. There is a Quit-Claim in Macomb Co. deed date 15 August 1861 where Joachim and Christine sell piece of land to August RADE. There were no BREDOW'S listed on the Mortality Schedule for that census year. Christine dies 25 April 1868 and her funeral was held at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waldenburg, Michigan. No marker has been found for her in the church cemetery but we can speculate she is buried there.2

In the 1870 census Joachim is listed as Joe and is still in Macomb with son Joachim and daughter Christina Malvina - 13. He is still farming. His real estate is now valued at $700 and personal property at $400. He is listed as a male citizen 21 years or older. There is a Joe DRADO listed in the Agricultural Census that year, that I am pretty certain is our Joachim/Joe. For one, I couldn't find a Joe DRADO in that same census plus his neighboring farmers (from the census) are listed with him on the Agricultural Census. In 1990 I checked with the Niagara County Clerk's Office/Court House and no naturalization records have been found for him. Joachim marries Caroline KUNZE on 6 Oct 1872. I believe the KUNZE name is from a prior marriage and not her maiden name. They were both in their early 70's. The spelling on their marriage record is BREDDOW. In October 1869 Joachim and Christine's daughter, Ernestine dies of Consumption (Tuberculosis) and is listed in the 1870 Mortality Schedule.

The 1880 census shows just Joachim listed as Jacob with his wife Caroline. He is still farming. Both were born in Prussia as were their parents. Joachim is listed on the Agricultural Census as Jacob. On 1 Jan 1883 Joachim filed his will in Macomb leaving everything to his wife, Caroline to use during her lifetime and then to be given to his children. Caroline died before Joachim so everything went to his children.

In December 1890 Joachim died of "Old Age", so says his death record. His death record also gives one more vital piece of information, the name of his parents, Daniel and Augusta BREDOW. Family Search has Augusta's full name as "Augusta Karoline Johanna SCHRORDER" but I have no other source for her full name so it is so far unproven. Joachim's will stated that $25 each was to go to John, Louise, Friedrich, William and Daniel was to receive $20 and the remainder of his estate to his youngest daughter Malvina.6

Joachim's funeral was held at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waldenburg and he is likely buried there.2,3 His estate records do not include at bill for a marker so most likely there isn't one.1 At the time his estate was finalized in 1898 (over 7 years after his death), Daniel had still not been located.

New York State Census By Year

1825, 1835, and 1845 New York State Censuses: The first three state censuses for New York are difficult to access and largely unavailable online. Most records have been lost—due to the 1911 State Capitol fire, all copies of this state census held by New York at that time were completely destroyed. However, it appears that Macomb Co. did not do any state census.

There is so much history and background about our ancestors in Prussia and why they left I couldn't begin to even summarize it here but want to recommend Eugene W. CAMANN'S books Uprooted From Prussia Transplanted in America and More Transplanting's in Wheatfield and the Monographs he wrote. I choose these paragraphs because they reference to our immigrant ancestor Joachim.

The Lutheran Separatists refused to send their children to the state school. Police from Bruessow forcibly escorted them there. Buts as soon as the police left the school by the front door, the children left by the back door. In October 1838 the following heads of families refused to pay their share of the annual allowance for the Union pastor and teacher: Weaver MOLL, Laborer LINKE, Shoemaker BALLERT, Laborer CASSUBE, Laborer BREDOW, Weaver FERCHEN and David MUELLER. Each one was fined some specific item that he possessed, anything from a live pig to a kitchen clock. These things were auctioned off and the proceeds used to pay the pastor and teacher. pg. 22

Nine Wheatfield families, consisting of 37 persons, can be definitely identified as having made the move to Michigan at this time. They are the families of Daniel BEGEROW, Joachim BREDOW, Adolph DRECHSLER, Friedrich GLOEDE, Friedrich KANDT, Johann KOEPSEL, Wilhelm PORTH, Johann STEINBRING and Gottfified ZABEL. pg 73
