J. I. Tipton was born July 5, 1930 in Gotebo, Oklahoma to Ira Jewell and Ellie Odell (Floyd) Tipton. On March 27, 2009, in a hospital with family members at his side, J. I. passed from this life and was welcomed into heaven by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Growing up during the Great Depression, J. I. knew that it meant to have little as far as this world was concerned, but was rich in many other ways as he was blessed with loving family who meant the world to him. There were probably very few days in which he did not speak to many of them by phone in order to keep them close to his heart.
He served in the Sea Bee's during the 1940s in the Philippines. He worked for Whitehurst Builders in Amarillo, Texas as a contractor for building grain elevators all over Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Montana. Even a few days before he fell and injured his head, he had begun to build a deck onto the house. His construction knowledge was used wherever he lived and was called upon many times by people who needed help with their building projects.
J. I. was saved and baptized at Caprock Baptist Church in Amarillo, Texas. When Jesus became his Savior, his life was forever changed, he loved to worship at his home church Bible Baptist in Chickasha. He loved to listen to J. Vernon McGee preach everyday at noon on a radio given to him by his Uncle Dale. J. I. and Margie moved from his beloved Tipton, Oklahoma to Chickasha in 1999. He married Margie Burris Hurd on February 28, 1976.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years Margie, and their five children: Denise Orlando and husband Joe, Scott Tipton and wife Paula, Tracy Tipton, Jayme Altom and husband Doug, Marla Marshburn and husband Steve; 11 grandchildren: Christopher Orlando, Eden Orlando, Ben Marshburn, Sydney Marshburn, Ali Altom, Jasper Altom, Ethan Altom, Marsha Bryant, Gary Hall, Stephen Hall and William Hall, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Interment will be in the Tipton Cemetery, Tipton, Oklahoma under the irection of Sevier Funeral Home of Chickasha. Published in The Chickasha Express Star from 3/30 - 4/1/2009
