" James Stigler, who came to Sunflower County in 1862, Had no medical degree, but he was known as "Dr. Stigler" in the vicinity of Ruleville where he rendered valuable service to sick people. A scarcity of money and the outbreak of the Civil War prevented this Holmes County native from realizing his dreams of attending medical school, but he studied medical books under the supervision of his uncle, Dr. Sam Oliphant, and treated people from far and near who came to him with health problems. He never charged for his services, but his patients often paid him with produce they had raised. page 607
