LaVern R. Portland Age 83, passed away Friday, November 21, 2003. He was born on June 10, 1920 in Ionia the son of Vern and Mildred (Reed) Bates.

Mr. Bates is a veteran of WW II having been in Pearl Harbor. He served 5 and half years in the Army as a tank commander in the Central Pacific.

LaVern retired from G.M. in 1982 and was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time on Drummond Island.

He was preceded in death by his parents , brothers, Jack and Richard Bates a sister, Joy Bates , son-in-law, Neil McDiarmid and a son, James R. Bates.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Gladys; and 2 daughters; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be conducted by Rev. Marilyn V. Danielson, Pastor and Rev. Gabriel Bates at 11;00 a.m., Monday, Novemebr 24, 2003 in the Lehman Funeral,210 E. Bridge St. Portland. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Sunday in the funeral home. For thos wishing contributions may be made to Great Lakes Hospice in memory of LaVern.
