William A. Barker born 1844. died at Camp Princeton (now West Virginia) on April 2, 1863, having served as a private in Company I, 60th Virginia Infantry Regiment, Pemberton Brigade, Confederate States Army.

He enlisted July 1, 1861, and was probably sworn in on August 10, 1861, at White Sulphur. The Company Muster Roll for January 1862 shows him absent and captured by the Yankees in Mercer County, Virginia, on January 20, 1862.

Union prisoners of war records show that he was captured January 23, 1862, in Mercer County, Virginia, and was imprisoned at Camp Chase, Ohio, and was a Depot prisoner-of-war near Sandusky, Ohio, where he was transferred for exchange. He was received near Vicksburg, Mississippi, December 8, 1862, by the Confederate Agent of Exchange.

The company Muster Roll for MArch and April 1862 shows that he died April 2, 1863, At Camp Princeton of typhoid fever. He was unmarried. It has been said that as a prisoner, he was forced to swim the Bluestone River. As a result of the swim , he died of pneumonia.



The letter that i posted is when he was in a prison camp with his father Massenna wrote a letter home to his wife informing her that their son was dying.
