from the Hiawatha Daily World - Saturday, May 24, 1941:
"A host of relatives and friends gathered at the Stewart home and Mt. Hope Cemetery Sunday for one last farewell to the late R.M. Stewart. The short service at the home was conducted by Rev. Walter E. Myers, of Leona. Rev. L.L. Hassenpflug, of Hiawatha, who had married him 37 years before, was in charge at the grave. His summons came when life was attractive, sweet, he was happy in his plans for the future. He recognized the importance of work, was ambitious beyond his strength, was stricken with a paint brush in his hand. His home was his realm, his hobby was flowers, his beautiful garden in Glendale is a living memorial to him. He was a devoted husband, father, a loving brother, a fond grandfather, the three little California granddaughters being his greatest joy in life, a true friend. He was enthusiastic over California, his adopted state, but he was loyal to Kansas, enjoyed his annual trip back to look after farm interests, to visit relatives, friends. In this closing chapter we may add, he was a friend to man, the world has been made better for his having passed thru it. The pall bearers were five of his cousins, R.M. Stewart, Robert Hart, R.M. Cornelison, Dr. J.C. Gillispie, J.S. Gillispie, a nephew, Chester Small. Mrs. Edward Koso, Mrs. Dan Chaney, Mrs. E.B. Miner, Elizabeth Anderson were in charge of the flowers. Those from a distance were Mrs. R.M. Stewart, Robert M., Judith Stewart, Glendale, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Stewart, Savannah, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Cline, Whitesville, Mo.; Mrs. Cecil Seabaugh, Jackson, Mo; Mr. and Mrs. Chester Small, Oskaloosa, Ks.; Dr. Frank Hassig, Mr. and Mrs. Charley Hassig, Effie Gillispie, H. Benejette, of Kansas City, Ks.; Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Rubert, Horace Rubert Jr; Walter Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Steele, of Kansas City, Mo.; Carrie Hovey, Leavenworth; Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Sippley, Council Bluffs, Ia.; W.A. Browning, Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Browning, Mr. and Mrs. Omer Yandell, Mr. and Mrs. Asa Sharp, Golda Sharp, Mrs. Lester Mitchell, Lena Lawrence, Craig, Mo.; Anna Englecamp, three daughters, Onega, Kans."
