William Addison Stuart born in 1835 in Putnam County, and was raised in Iowa. Stuart enlisted in the US Army, along with the entire student body of Central University of Iowa in Pella, IA in 1861. He enlisted as a private and was wounded at the battle of Shiloh. After recuperating he was promoted to captain, and joined the 60th Infantry Regiment US Colored Troops. At the close of the civil war and during Reconstruction, he was attached to the Freedmen's Bureau as a district military commander in Arkansas. As an agent for the Freedmen's Bureau he was responsible for protecting the the newly freed slaves and starting schools for their children. Like other Freedmen's Bureau agents, he encountered much violence against him and his family from the Ku Klux Klan and eventually moved to Kokomo, IN. Later in life he moved to Idaho to teach elementary school. He died at Harpster, ID in 1900.
