He suffered a stroke in his trailer in Tennessee and lay there unable to move or speak for several days until a neighbor found him. His sister Helen brought him to Virginia where he passed away in the hospital. The church records also show he was divorced from his wife, Mary Lee (Marie) Sutphin-Patton but I have not been able to locate any records proving that.
UPDATE: I did just locate a marriage record between Charlie and a Viola Lee Bennett/Stripling/Bunch. I talked with the record keeper in TN and was told point blank that back in those days if the person applying for a marriage license stated he had been divorced ... they would have taken his word for it. So, he could have still been married to Mary at the time he married Viola.
