He was the son of Cecil Harrelson and his second wife Frances Ferry. "The Roosevelt Journal," published by the Students of Roosevelt Junior High School, San Francisco, California, June 1934, listed him as one of the junior high graduates that year, indicating that 1919 is likely the correct year of his birth.

At the time of the 1940 Census, he was living and working in a WPA camp in Monterey. Later that year, he enlisted in the Army, destined to go to the Philippines. His Army record showed he was born on August 3, 1915, so apparently he overstated his age by four years when he enlisted.
