DEMING, N.M. -- Vance Henderson, 78, Deming, N.M., formerly of Topeka, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, at a Las Cruces, N.M., hospital.

Mr. Henderson was a truck driver for Kansas Sand, Topeka. He also worked for International Paper, Sawmill Division, in Lakeside, Ore., for 16 years before retiring in 1984. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was born Sept. 25, 1920, in Parthenon, Ark., the son of Samuel and Ola Jones Henderson. He moved from Topeka to Lakeside, Ore., in 1967 then to Deming, N.M., in 1988. Mr. Henderson was a member of the Ballut Abyad Shriners Temple, Albuquerque, N.M.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite and a member of the York Rite in the Deming Lodge No. 12, AF & AM. He was a member of the Deming, N.M., VFW and several square dance clubs.

He married Margaret Cobb on Oct. 16, 1964, in Benton, Ark. She survives, of the home.

Survivors also include a son, Samuel Henderson, Bristow, Okla.; two daughters, Shirley Chaves, El Paso, Texas, and Jeanie Henson, Topeka; a stepson, Charles Manley, Olympia, Wash.; three stepdaughters, Georgia Parks, Lakeside, Ore., Jacqueline Flower, Topeka, and Beverly Smalley, Wichita; a brother, Vernon Henderson, Topeka; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Davidson Funeral Home, Topeka.

Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Ozawkie Cemetery, Ozawkie.

Mr. Henderson will lie in state after 8 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where friends may visit from 1:30 p.m. until funeral time.

Military services will be conducted by Philip Billard VFW Post No. 1650, Topeka. Masonic services will be conducted by Golden Rule Lodge No. 90 of AF & AM, Topeka.

The family suggests memorials to Ballut Abyad Temple Children's Travel Fund, sent in care of the Davidson Funeral Home, 1035 N. Kansas Ave., Topeka, Kan., 66608.
