He was a member of Battalion Head Quarter Company, where he served as Batman to Lt. Col. Arthur Boyes.
When Lt. Col. Boyes was relieved of his command of the 2/26 Battalion and placed in charge of "X" Battalion, Stan willingly followed his Commanding Officer and mentor.
The majority of "X" Battalion were poorly trained raw, newly arrived reinforcements or members of auxiliary companies who often had never even held a rifle, less fired one.
The Japanese attacked the Battalion at Bukit Timah during the night of 10 February 1942, and practically wiped out the sleeping men. The ill trained sentries had been quickly disposed of.
A small remnant of the Battalion escaped and made their way back to Head Quarters, where they reported the carnage, and gave their report on the fighting.
It has always been understood that Stan and Lt. Col Boyes died fighting back to back, but dates of death of both men contradict this theory, or was it simply a matter of very hard to read recording by overworked Head Quarter staff, who documented that Stan was BELIEVED originally buried at position 743152.
Stan is commemorated in Australia at The Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
