Mae Powell, 73, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001.
Private graveside services will be Wednesday in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Dickerson, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40.
Mrs Powell was born May 18, 1928, in Deport, to Albert Jackson Hawkins and Eva Lela Brown Hawkins.
She was a waitress
She married Virgil Ladell Hightower Feb 10, 1947, in Paris. He preceded her in death on July 11, 1955 in Memphis. She then married George Albert Powell March 4, 1958 in Wichita Falls. He preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 1970, in Amarillo. She also was preceded in death by a son , Phillip Earl Hightower; three brothers, Ray Hawkins, Monell Hawkins and Wendell Hawkins; three sisters, Nell Hawkins, Doris Hawkins and Sadie Hawkins; and a grandson, Virgil Dale Hightower.
Mrs. Powell was a Baptist.
Survivors include two sons, Virgil Don Hightower of Marietta, Okla., and George Edward Powell of Amarillo; two brothers A.J. Hawkins and Harold Hawkins,both of Birthright; five sisters, Treva Nall of Rolling Prairie, Ind., Patsy Childress of Michigan City, Ind., Eva Cooper of Troup, Betty Ray of Ozark, Ala., and Linda Haley of Forney; eight grandchildren, Shannon Dewayne Hightower, Krystina Mae Hightower, Victor Ladell Hightower, Timothy Don Clayton Hightower,Barbara Leanne Michelle Hightower, Michael David Powell, Amanda Renea Gay and Tabitha Gail Powell; and four great-grandchildren, Jazmine Hightower, Megan Hightower, Joshua Hightower and Christina Marie Gay.
The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
