FLIPPEN, JR., NEWTON GATES was born on April 14, 1918 and passed away on October 26, 2004 after a short illness during which he was lovingly cared for by his daughter Barry O'Brien. He was a lifelong Dallasite and member of a prominent family. His father established the first Ford auto dealership in Dallas history. He was a devoted husband, brother, father, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather and was loved and admired by all of his family and by his many friends. Throughout his entire life he remained slim and strong with a youthful appearance and with all of the qualities of a gentleman. He attended Kemper Military Academy and Southern Methodist University. During World War II he flew P-38's and B-25's in the Army Air Force and rose to the rank of Captain. After the war he bought his own Ford dealership. Later he became an executive in The Stewart Company, a large distributor of Ford products. Along with a successful business career he was a successful golfer. He won trophies as a young man. In his later years he sought and achieved a goal coveted by serious golfers - to shoot your own age. He actually accomplished this many times. In his entire golfing career he had four holes-in-one and two double eagles. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Catherine Oliver and his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Exall Flippen. Together Newt and Dorothy's dancing was the perennial hit at several dance clubs. He was deeply religious, attended church at St. Rita's Catholic Church, and enjoyed being an usher. Newt is survived by his daughter, Dorothy Bussa and Barry O'Brien, her children, Kellie Wieczorek, Barry Fryar, Timothy O'Brien, Kevin O'Brien, Michael O'Brien, Sean O'Brien; Cynthia Catherine Oliver's children, John Oliver, Kitty Oliver Underwood, Brannon Oliver, his sister, Kay Flippen Durham, her children, Amy Aldridge, Scott Durham, Sally Feagans, and his brother, Brooks Edward Houghton Flippen of San Rafael, CA and his daughter, Debi Flippen and ten great-grandchildren. Newt Flippen will be truly missed. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 1, 2004 at St. Rita's Catholic Church, 12521 Inwood Rd., Dallas. Interment Oakland Cemetery, Dallas. Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, October 31, 2004 at Restland Funeral Home. Please send memorials to Visiting Nurses Association Hospice, 1440 W. Mockingbird Lane, Ste. 500, Dallas, 75247. Restland 972-238-7111 restlandfuneralhome.com
