Nita lived her entire life in Dallas. She graduated valedictorian from Highland Park High School. She was a gifted pianist and went to the University of Colorado, Boulder to study music but she decided to head back to Texas to attend Southern Methodist University where she earned a bachelor's degree in accounting. She returned to SMU several years later and earned her Masters degree in Medieval European history. She taught eighth grade language arts for many years at Harry Stone Middle School in the Dallas Independent School District. She died at age 47 after a nine month battle with pancreatic cancer.
