On 27 April 1861 Jerome enlisted in Company C, Ohio 19th Infantry Regiment Ohio at the rank of Corporal in a Surgical unit. He mustered out on 29 Aug 1861. During the Civil War, he was in active service under Generals McClellan and Rosecrans in Western Virginia. He was stationed at Swift U.S.A. General Hospital in Wisconsin from Oct. 1864 to Sept. 1865 (Turner, 1872). He was found in the Civil War Pension Index and he received a pension in Colorado. Jerome was elected to the Wisconsin Assembly as a State Representative. His biography states that he moved to Wisconsin in 1862, settling in Patch Grove. It goes on to note that he studied at Orwell Academy and became a physician (Turner, A.J., Compiler, 1872, Wisconsin Legislative Manual of the State of Wisconsin. Dr. J. B. Cory, well known in this city, died at 1 o'clock Sunday morning after a long and painful illness. He was buried from the family residence near the corner of Scott and Greenwood streets, one and a half blocks south of Elitch's gardens, Highlands, at 2 o'clock p. m. yesterday.
