Dr. Russell Brooks Butler/Barber, Ph.D Nov. 4, 1934-June 4, 2007

"Rusty" was born in Tacoma General Hospital and was the first baby to use the footprint machine on a Birth Certificate. The final curtain came down at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He lost his battle against MRSA. He'd been spending his winters in South Florida and enjoying the summer months in Gig Harbor since 2001.

"Rusty" graduated from Peninsula High School with honors, class of '53, attending the College of Puget Sound, went on to Stanford University in Palo Alto, California for the Masters Program and finally receiving a PH.D in communications from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. While working on his PH.D he spent time in Switzerland studying Eurovision and the Telestar for his thesis. Upon completing his college education he began his work in Network Television at CBS in New York City and in 1973 he became the Religion and Ethics Editor for NBC Television in New York City until 1990. During this period he was frequently the Contributing Editor for the TODAY show, and NBC News Specials. He earned 3 Emmys, 1 Gabriel, and numerous other industry and religious awards.
A small sampling of participants of interviewees on the show he produced and hosted on WNBC-TV a local weekly religion series, The First Estate: Religion in Review, were:

Mother Teresa
The Dalai Lama
Dr. Billy Graham
Dr. Norman Vincent Peale
Terence Cardinal Cooke, Archbishop of New York
Jerry Falwell

The young man who grew up in Longbranch, Washington, was a voracious reader, scholar and world traveler. He served on many boards, amongst them was the world's largest monetary prize, the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion, presented each year by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace in London. He was also a Knight Commander in the American Society of The Venerable Hospital Order of St. John of Jerusalem.

Most recently Dr. Russell Barber, traveled the world including his goal to go to Antarctica so he could dance with the Penguins! He also was teaching at Nova Southeastern University, writing and working on a new way to promote Peace and Harmony in the world. He was instrumental in receiving the World Harmony Runners in Tacoma who had run from the United Nations Building in NYC through all the states in the USA last June. A plaque was presented to Port Officials declaring Port of Tacoma the "World Harmony Harbor"!

Rusty, was predeceased by father Russell Butler, Mother Verga Barber, Stepfather Lloyd Barber and niece Jill Price Allen. He is survived by sister, Sharon Price (Dick), Nephew, Rick Price (Stephanie), Great nephew, Eric Allen and Great niece Nicole Allen all of the Tacoma area and a dear traveling friend Madeline Mays from South Florida and good friend Dr. Donald Fong, New Jersey.

In a recent interview I would like to quote some of the printed comments of this interview which was in one of the South Florida Newspapers. "If we are all Children of God, then surely He loves us all, including all the "flavors" He made us in." So, for me, Faith is more important than Religion. Faith is the Mountain Top, and the various Religions of the world are the many and arduous paths to the Top of the Mountain. Some paths are false paths, but there are many others which are true but difficult ways to the Top, where there is sufficient Peace, Love, and Light from The Supreme for us all. We need to respect each ones religious path as he or she climbs through a life of service and belief."

There will be a Celebration of Life at Tuell-McKee Funeral Home, 2215 Sixth Avenue, Tacoma, Washington at 1pm - Wednesday, June 20, 2007. Donations to a charity of choice or donate to the Russell Brooks Butler Barber Scholarship fund at the University of Puget Sound, 1500 North Warner Tacoma, WA. 98416- 1037 You may visit www.tuell mckee.com for comments to the family. A second celebration is planned for Wednesday, January 23, 2008, 3 PM at the "Oasis" 180 Isle of Venice in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Rusty your presence is truly missed!
