US Government Official. He served as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), during the Administrations of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson from 1961 until 1965. He received his degree in Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. Over the course of twenty-years, he went from a riveter and boilermaker to the proprietor of a company for which constructed refineries, power plants, shipyards and aircrafts. He had amassed millions by the time President Harry S. Truman appointed him to serve on the Air Policy Commission in 1947. He would go on to served as a Special Deputy to Secretary of State James V. Forrestal and later as Under Secretary of the Air Force during the Truman Administration. After an absence from government service for a few years during the 1950s, President Eisenhower appointed McCone to serve as the head of the Atomic Energy Commission (1958 to 1960). McCone was appointed by President Kennedy to succeed Allen W. Dulles in 1961 as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) following the “Bay of Pigs” fiasco. At the helm, McCone helped restore credibility to the agency and the Kennedy Administration following the successful resolution to the “Cuban Missile Crisis” in October of 1962. Following President Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, McCone remained under President Johnson. However, unlike his predecessor, Johnson relied more on his National Security team for advisement rather than the CIA. As a result McCone resigned in 1965 and returned to private business.
