Dr. A.J. Mayfield was born June 1, 1845, and died at the Mayfield Sanitarium in St. Louis, November 11, 1911. The doctor was in good health up to a few days of his death when he became seriously ill and died within a few hours after reaching the sanitarium. When a young man, Dr. Mayfield united with the Old Castor Baptist Church, now Marquand Church, in which he took an active part for a number of years. He was a member of the Fredericktown Baptist Church at the time of his death. He was a true Christian, a sound Baptist and a jolly good brother. He studied medicine in the early 80's and became an active physician and surgeon and continued to practice until death. He was a surgeon of ability. About a year ago the wife of Dr. Mayfield was called to her reward. She was truly a good woman and a loving companion and from this loss the doctor never fully recovered. He leaves four most excellent children; Drs. George and Boyd Mayfield, Mrs. Herbert A. Clark and Mrs. Jefferson Ramsey and several grandchildren besides a large number of other relatives and friends to mourn their loss. However their loss is his gain. May God bless the children. After the regular divine service which was conduced by Rev. W.A. Davault, the remains were laid to rest in the Old Sitze Cemetery by the Masonic fraternity. The floral tribute was beautiful.
